Grinding Hints  >

Do not apply too much pressure or dwell on one area for too long during grinding. Use a sweeping action to grind a larger surface so that the work is not concentrated in one area.

During high pressure metal grinding use a Spiral Cool back up pad that increases airflow between the abrasive resin fibre disc and the backup pad which takes heat away from the work area.

Resin Fibre Discs are used for heavy stock removal on electric or pneumatic angle grinders. As they are two dimensional and only have a single layer of grit, they have a limited lifespan. Once the grit has lost its sharp edge, the disc should be discarded.

Excessive heat can be overcome via,

1. Selecting the correct disc for the job. (see our fibre disc selection guide)

2. Choose a disc with a self sharpening grain such as zircon. If the grain is self sharpening it will give a cleaner & cooler cut.

3. Choose a disc with a grinding aid. Grinding aids are built into the resin component of the disc and reduce friction and heat buildup during use.

Grinding Speed Recommendations

During grinding, the maximum peripheral operating speed of a fibre disc is 80 m/s. In no circumstances should the speed be exceeded. The spindle speed of the machine must never exceed the maximum operating speed of the disc.

Spindle speeds in rpm corresponding to 80 m/s for different disc diameters are given below based on this formula.
Peripheral Speed, n = ( 60,000 X v ) / ( 3.14 X d )

Where,     n = maximum peripheral speed (rpm)
                 v = fixed 80 m/s (limiting velocity)
                 d = diameter of disc (m)
